About Us
The Well Asian
Information and Advice Centre was opened in March 1994, by the Church of
Scotland, as the result of a needs survey which had been carried out in
the area.
The Well is a drop-in
information and advice to the Asian Communities of Glasgow – in
particular the Pollokshields and Govanhill areas. We deal with all
sorts of issues, from help with filling in benefits forms, to liasing
with utility companies, or simply providing a listening ear.
The Well takes its
name from John chapter 4, the account of Jesus meeting the woman at the
well, where the man met the woman, the Jew the Samaritan. The desire of
all who are involved with The Well is to: “Serve the Asian Communities
holistically, with Christian love and compassion, enabling
cross-cultural understanding in an ethnically diverse city”.
The Well is uniquely
placed to build bridges between communities who would never otherwise
meet.
There are 4 paid staff
in The Well: a community worker; an assistant community worker; a
women’s outreach worker and a part-time clerical worker.
The Well depends on
volunteers, who come from many different churches across the city, all
of whom are committed to doing their best to serve the local Asian
Community – and over the years have succeeded in creating a family
atmosphere within the centre.
We do not hide the
fact that we are Christian, and have the story of John 4 in a framed
calligraphy in the reception area. People respect that we too are
people of faith.
